After a cursory look at available information it appears to me that some how Marty Prehn may have been the driving force behind this entire guardian debacle. There wasn't any horrific guardianship abuse case until Marty inserted himself and the Chism children needed a local big mouth. Did Marty Prehn convince the Chism siblings that if they disputed their fathers guardianship they could ultimately take control of his finances?
An excerpt from the Macomb Daily on 5/25/12 reads:
Regarding the medical issues, Karen Chism says she was “doing what the doctors were telling her to do.”
Scott Bright, Karen Chism’s retained attorney, referred to the children’s campaign as, “Kids gone wild,” in a hearing last week in Macomb County Probate Court in Mount Clemens.
He further said the 1,700 supporters of their Facebook effort “swallowed their line hook, line and sinker.”
Where else have we witnessed this type of online attack? Oh that's right - in another case Marty Prehn inserted his fat face - his mother's, where it has been proven that Marty stole both Bernice's savings and paltry social security checks! By attacking the ones who were actually caring for the health and well being of his mother and falsely accusing them of what he himself was doing, he hoped to regain control and continued funding of his carefree lifestyle of eating everything in sight! Now look at the same kind of evil attack, aimed at another innocent woman - Dr. Chism's wife, Karen:

Marty Prehn Apr 13 Oh where or where can Doc Chism be. Oh where oh we can he be? He was ruled to be of sound mind so why is he not set FREE? He is being held captive by an emotionally sick woman much like the situation in a movie starring Kathy Bates where she kept a reporter I believe drugged up and in her home away from the public and away from his family. Too bad Michigan no longer has the death penalty so that people who are financially exploited and are abused physically or emotionally can no longer fend for themselves and speak up out of fear by their captors."
Marty always has a financial motive. He was actually attempting to get permission to have Dr. Chism live with him and Marty (yes, that Marty Prehn), to be his paid caretaker!
The court wisely poo-pooed this idea. Marty lost the proposed gig and subsequently lost his mother's house to foreclosure. Now why would these devoted, caring and concerned children pawn their father off on a complete stranger who has zero history with this family? Why wouldn't they want to take care of him? Just exactly who looked to financially benefit from being conservator of Dr. Chism? (This was the clinching factor for me, that the children would place their father with a complete stranger when he wanted to be with his wife and was deemed mentally capable of making this decision.)
The majority of the Chism children have sorted legal troubles. Here is just a Christmas Sampler of their troubles:
Laurie was caught running scam companies in what appears to have been defrauding hard working people as well as people looking for work. She was ordered to pay restitution and fines. Jimmy, Curt and Laurie all have or had child support arrearage troubles. Steven and Curt appear to have had criminal court issues from various misdeeds. This behavior/history falls in line with Marty and the Chism children defending an application for a restraining order against them filed by Karen That is about the extent of Marty's involvement with Dr Chism's case, as Marty Prehn was not involved with any probate hearings. Marty appears to only be a very loud mouthpiece, who will launch online attacks to harass innocent people and in this case, he used the greed of the Chism children as well.
Dr. Chism is now home with his loving wife and taking care of himself and his finances. His wife Karen did nothing wrong as far as I see it. She did what any loving spouse would do under the circumstances in trying to liquidate an unused asset (his chiropractic practice) to help out with what looked like an uncertain medical future. This is not uncommon, and certainly nothing to scream fraud over. It was a wise financial decision to preserve the value in a business that Dr. Chism could no longer service because of his health problems. Karen had no history of doing anything financially damaging to her husband and now wouldn't be the time to start. There are, however, damning court cases against the Chism children and their poor financial management. Trying to twist Karen's prudent decision into an attempt on her husbands life was not just reaching, it was malicious and cruel. Nothing in any reports I have seen show that Karen acted out of anything but love and compassion for her husband. (Side note: It is a fact that insurance companies often pressure people to make decisions for loved ones who are not showing improvement because they don't like indefinite hospital bills and this could be the case here.)
After all the reports, investigations, court hearings and wasted money fighting, there was not one thing to substantiate the claims by Marty Prehn or the Chism children that their father was being abused. Not one.
Dr. Chism seems to be yet another victim of Bad Advocate Abuse, lead by Marty Prehn, who has taken and continues to take every opportunity to slander and libel Karen Chism. All other guardianship abuse advocates who reported this story through Marty's eyes should be ashamed of themselves.
And Marty? Since that caretaker gig didn't go down as he planned, he tried to cut his losses. He actually thinks he's going to sell his hateful Facebook page, "Saving the Life of Dr. Jim Chism" to either the Hallmark or Lifetime channels for movie rights, staring - you guessed it - Jennifer Love Hewitt as Laurie Chism. Now that's some good fiction!
What's the recurring theme in allegations Elder Abuser Marty Prehn and the Chism children used in both of their cases:
* Alleged Starvation
* Alleged Murder/attempted murder
* Alleged Poisoning
* Alleged Greed by the good guys
* Alleged Kidnapping
* Alleged FBI, CIA, DOJ involvement.
